Evaluation

Photographing student life between fresher's week and Christmas

In this assignment, the task was to photograph the student life between the fresher’s week and Christmas. My first idea was to photograph different aspects of student life like shopping, studying, sports, parties, cooking, and socializing but this brought up some problems; the first issue was the number of shots, in order for me to photograph all the shots I had in mind I would have needed many more photos than just six and the other issue was the fact that I could not relate the photographs together since they were different people doing different things which would be fine but I would rather have a narrative that relates my photos closer together. In the end, I decided to focus on a more specific subject, and I ended up with students studying. Which led me to go to the library. When in the library I managed to take multiple shots which allowed me to complete my assignment, I had some problems with the lighting but luckily, I was able to overcome this by using flash.
Another thing that I had to focus on was taking the context shot; my original idea was to photograph multiple people in the library, but I decided to not do this since it would be too like the other shots I already had. In the end, I decided to take a photograph of the University of Gloucestershire which doesn’t fit with the other shots as perfectly, but I decided to keep it and in order to try and make it relate more I tried to choose a photo which showed a person entering the building which I thought would be a good intro to the library shots.
I also had another shot that was a bit unrelated to the others. Around the same time as doing my assignment, I was having an interesting interaction with a neighbour of mine. This interaction was through notes that we would stick on our windows. I took several photos of these notes and was thinking of submitting these photos since they were about student life, and they were a narrative that I thought was interesting enough to have its own photo stories but sadly most of the shots were very similar to each other which made me change my mind and decide not to do this. However, I decided to keep one of the shots which were the first notes of us saying hello to each other since I thought it was an interesting shot and was also a good introduction to have as the first photograph.
While doing this shoot, I have learned to think more about narratives and how to relate my shots more together which makes me want to paint a clearer picture in my mind before going to the shoots in the future. I have also managed to experiment more with different angles and lightings which will help me in the future. If I were to do this shoot again, I would also try and focus more on having something similar in every shot since I think that would make the series stand out more. This can be something like including a camera in the frame to having a specific colour be present in all the shots.
