Association of Photographers(AOP) & National Union of Journalists (NUJ)

Association of Photographers (AOP):

AOP is a non profit association made to help photographers promote and publish their work. The AOP also helps photographers by assisting in problems that they might have with their businesses in a commercial environment.

The AOP's target audience is mainly British and European Professional photographers but they also provide assistance to others.

National Union of Journalists (NUJ):

NUJ is a trade association based in the UK and Ireland who are one of the largest independent Journalist unions. They help their members work across a wide range of media forms like newspapers, magazines, tv, website, books and much more. The NUJ have very strong beliefs and try to be diverse and promote equalities.

Benefits of joining the AOP:

The main benefit of joining the AOP is the validation and the advertising opportunities for the members; this is regularly done through the website, magazines and events.

They have staff who can help members with their enquiries and can offer a variety of resources like online PDFs and discounts on certain products like Dell and Apple.

Benefits of joining the NUJ:

The NUJ gives members the opportunity to promote and publish their articles and projects, as well as the chance to work across different media forms. Another benefit of joining the NUJ are the other members; joining the NUJ will allow you to build connections and networks with other journalists and members.

They provide training opportunities for the members and they also set up events where you can join.

Ethical debates

Controversial photographs

The terror of var a.k.a. Napalm girl (NICK UT).jpg

The terror of war a.k.a Napalm girl (NICK UT)

Photographing children, capturing someones pain, capturing someone naked, capturing soldiers and explosions or capturing the harsh reality of war?

I am a big fan of this photograph since it had multiple positive impacts on the world and it also shows the truth.

Camelot's Mona Lisa a.k.a Blown Jackie (Ron Galella)

Breaching the privacy of Jackie Kennedy, affecting celebrities' personal lives, or simply photographing celebrities?

In my mind even though this photograph is capturing the truth I feel like it is a visible difference between a photojournalist and a paparazzi so I am not a fan of it.

VJ-Day in times square (ALFRED EISENSTEAD).jpg

VJ-Day in times square (ALFRED EISENSTEAD)

Man kissing random people, a picture of crime (harassment), breach of privacy or simply capturing someone expressing their happiness?

I personally do not see anything wrong with this image since it shows the truth and has captured something natural.

download.jpg

abu ghraib 2004

Photographing torture of prisoners, Humiliation, breach of privacy or trying to show the truth of the Abu Ghraib scandal?

Even though the images in this series are not pleasing to look at I feel like they have shown  a truth that otherwise would have stayed hidden so I am happy that they were taken.
